May K. (maykayart.wordpress.com) is a research scientist and an artist. She looks at the 3D view of proteins until she 'sees' something, and she then draws an image using the protein's 3D structure as the base for the image. Often her image links to the protein's actual purpose in some way. Students can use their imaginations (not to mention some bioinformatics by using pdb.org) to do something similar; science and art are closely woven.
